Bea Arthur: Not Your Average Celebrity

I just heard the news. Beatrice Arthur, an actress and celebrity well known for her television roles in, 'Maude' and 'The Golden Girls' died of cancer Saturday. She was 86 years old. Arthur died peacefully at her Los Angeles home early Saturday with her family at her side, a family spokesperson told the Associated Press. The actress would have turned 87 on May 13.

Arthur's first role as an actress was playing the character of Maude in the hit series, 'All in the Family'. After an impressive performance, CBS decided on a spin off, and the t.v. show 'Maude' was born. Her future series through NBC, 'The Golden Girls' earned 10 emmy's.

I'm sure the mainstream media will offer plenty of information on the specifics, but I want to focus on the person, Bea Arthur. I'm a little young to remember 'Maude', but 'The Golden Girls' is one of my all time favorite t.v. shows. I never watched it while it was on the air, but once I did get around to watching it, I was hooked.

Bea Arthur was the kind of celebrity that didn't act like a celebrity. I'm sure in her death, the media will try to sensationalize everything and anything they possibly can. They always do with celebrities, but with Bea, what needs to be remembered is that she was a true talented actress, and a real person. She wasn't a celebrity because the media made her into one. She was a celebrity because of what she created when she stepped in front of the camera.

What struck me about Bea Arthur was that she was a sincere genuine person, and that stood out in her acting. She never let her fame or her celebrity change who she was as a person. She was an outspoken celebrity on many issues, and was a great female role model.

The Golden Girls was not only a hilarious t.v. comedy, but it also dealt with real issues that people experience in their lives every day. I don't think I could possibly do the t.v. show or Bea Arthur justice with my words, so I'll leave it up to her.
